The Dengue Fever Scare

According to the China Post, there has been 648 cases of dengue fever in China as of December 8th. Of the 648 cases, 430 cases alone was from Kaohsiung City!! The second death of the year was also in Kaohsiung City. The fever's not really life-threatening, but it is caused by blood transfusion, namely - MOSQUITOES!!

On Wednesday morning, pink notices were pasted on ALL the doors in our neighbourhood. I was in a rush to get out, so I didn't read it, and neither did my roommate, Ansy. When we later came home that evening, at MIDNIGHT, we found out it was a notice for a neighbourhood-wide pesticide-spraying event! We were to cover all the eating utensils in the house with plastics because people were coming INTO our house to spray every room, including our porch, bedrooms, and even the bathrooms! It was nuts!!

Grace happened to be sleeping over (as she usually does on Wednesday nights so we can go to Partners Meeting on Thursday mornings). We all sat our alarm clocks for 8:30am, because that's when the pesticide-spraying will begin, and refusing them to enter our apartment means a 60,000 NT dollars fine (approximately $2000 CAN). But we didn't need our alarm clocks, because at 8:00am, the whole neighbourhood was awake with noise. All the neighbours were outside, talking (ahem, mostly complaining), and taking their dogs out.

The government workers went into every single apartment to check that we've covered our eating area, told us not to worry, and tried their best to not let the angry neighbours' complaints get to them =P.

So.... here's a little video my roommate created. If you can't view it from the link, feel free to go onto my Facebook page and click into the link... enjoy! =D
